Im in college and I go to a science school, so there is always alot of stress. I want to lose about 30-35 pounds, i know it wont happen at once so right now im gonna focus on getting at leat 12 pounds lighter in the near future. I do not know where to start, my dad bought me a meal plan so i do not want to skimp on the disgusting caf food, i usually get soem veggies in a take out box. I read so many different things everyday for weight loss? what can I do?
College is actually full of opportunities to get fit and healthy- you just have to plan ahead and be willing to work for it.
- Staying Active: The chances are good that you probably don’t have a car. This is a good thing! Besides not having to pay for insurance and parking, walking is great exercise! Walk to the nearest coffeeshop to study, walk to the grocery store to buy healthy foods- walk everywhere you can! Pick a sunny spot all the way across campus to study instead of just lounging around your dorm. Get active in every way you can, and try to carve out at least 30 minutes 3x a week to get to the gym and do some weights and high intensity intervals to kickstart your weightloss.
- Plan Your Meals. ALWAYS have veggies and fruit on hand. Store apples in your dorm room. Master the art of selecting the best food from the cafeteria. Keep granola and trail mix on hand in case of a snack attack.
- Make healthy choices when you eat out. And watch portion sizes! Restaurants give you huge dishes, so make sure to listen to your body and stop eating when you’re full.
- Have quick meals on hand. This website has a great tip about making food in your dorm: “There are plenty of quick meals you make in your apartment or dorm that do not require an oven. If you have a microwave, you can steam vegetables in a microwave safe container with a little water. Add this to some instant brown and wild rice and toss in a little soy sauce. In desperate times look for a low fat frozen dinner that contains chicken, vegetables and wild rice or whole wheat pasta. Be careful because many of these dishes are high in sodium.”
And last but not least: MAKE TIME TO EXERCISE. Yes, college is crazy. Yes, you will be stressed out. But exercise helps lower stress and anxiety levels due to the endorphins it releases. When things get crazy, hit the gym!
Good Luck :)
